About me, Linda Gough:

Education has been my life. I consider myself very lucky to have been involved in many roles: teacher, tutor, examiner, teacher trainer, SENCO, senior leader, consultant and advisor, over the past 30 years.

A key issue across all of these roles has been raising children’s achievement and much discussion took place into why, whatever was tried, there was always a group of children who seemed “stuck”, academically and, often, socially.

Ten years ago I became friends with a family whose circumstances were quite unusual: mum and dad and two of their three children were learning disabled, with global development delay. The third child, Katie, a friend of my daughter’s, was not learning disabled. As I got to know them better, I was able to support in small ways, such as reading school newsletters, filling in forms, making phone calls and so on. I became increasingly aware of the different experience of school that Katie had. Her parents could not read or write and struggled in circumstances such as parents’ evening. There were no books at home, no computers. They did not understand that they should ask Katie about her day. I began to wonder how many of the underachieving children I mentioned earlier were being brought up in circumstances similar to this, how many of our children at school had parents with Special Needs or Learning Disabilities.

From this thought, I moved on to researching the subject and developing ideas for training and support, leading to the establishment of “Parents need…”
